I wanted to see what was happening in the world of listed asset managers, so I am having a look at the performance of BlackRock (BLK) the world's largest listed asset manager and the worlds largest asset manager by AUM (this does not reference any sovereign wealth funds), it is almost a proxy for the USA equity market as I see from the chart below, with a caveat this is only for the last 5 years. The performance of BLK has been even more impressive over a longer period of time as seen in the bottom chart.
But first I want to show a table taken from WTW website, dated 23rd October, 2023 listing the top asset managers by AUM from the data they collected with figure from 31st December, 2022.
The below is an illustration that I have taken for the performance of BLK against what I consider those largest pure asset managers in the above table as a small sample compared to BRK.A and S&P 500 for 5 years and then from the beginning of January 2000. The bottom chart really shows how BLK has come to dominate equity performance since the acquisition of Barclays Global Investors (BGI) following the global financial crisis of 2008/2009. That transformation propelled BLK into the dominate share of global ETF's, with it near competitors being State Street and Invesco with their own purchase of PowerShares Capital Management acquired in 2006.
